  • This exhibition is a continuation of Daniels’ skilful reconstructions of historical paintings by artists such as Cezanne, Caravaggio and Baselitz.  This series of interpretations have been painted not from card and paper models as before, but from maquettes formed with aluminium foil.  This material creates a further degree of abstraction with multiplied planes and faces, which emphasises the level of removal from the original masterpieces.  The images Daniels’ references for his meticulously painted works are taken from historical paintings in which Daniels finds meaning or resonance through their subject matter or the qualities in the original painting.

The works, painted in oil, have an almost obsessive level of detail, and are often repeated simply with a change of lighting on the maquette.

By re-presenting works considered masterpieces, Daniels’ painting has a sense of humility alongside a level of controlled intensity in these small works on board.

William Daniels this year has had a solo exhibition at Marc Foxx, Los Angeles, and has  participated in At Home at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, Yvon Lambert, New York, Counterfacture at Luhring Augustine, New York, and  April is the Cruellest Month at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow.
